Too Much Sugar Can Kill You, Research Shows

SugardangerNeed another reason to kick sugar — other than that all those cookies and candies can make you fat?

Let me dish the facts to you blluntly:

Too much sugar can kill you.

That’s the conclusion of a new research study, published in the reputatble Journal of the American Medical Assocation.

The study found that Americans consume too much sugar and that their exess intake can lead to cardiovascular disease and death. 

Added sugars are the worst.

Those are the sweetneers contained in soda, fruit drinks, candies, cereal and breads, as well as processed foods you find in a can, jar or package.

Although some of us sugar experts believe you should consume even less, here are the recommendations from various organizations.

  • The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugars to less than 100 calories daily for women and 150 calories daily for men.
  • The World Health Organization suggests that you limit your sugar consumption to less than 10% of your calories.
  • The Institute of Medicine recommends that added sugars make up less than 25% of your total calories. (I believe that this recommendation is outrageously high.)
